TeeCraze has the opportunity to talk to Stephen Harris who our readers may know as Zomboy. Stephen’s art can be seen all over the daily t-shirt sites and has developed a great style.
Please give us a brief bio, where you are from, how you started in this field and how long you’ve been doing it?
I’m from Melbourne Australia. I first started making tees about 25 years ago when I was a kid. I used to get markers for material and draw out designs in pencil and go over them with marker. I still have these tees to this day 80s awesome!!!
When did you first discover your creative talents?
When I was a kid, I have been drawing all my life!
When did you realize you wanted to become an artist?
When I was a kid – it was a childhood dream of mine – dreams do come true!
How would you define the style of your art?
Pop.
Is there anything that regularly inspires your work?
Not particularly, the concepts just come to me.
How long does it usually take you to create a piece?
One to three days depending on how complex it is.
Describe the general process you go through to design and realize a piece of work?
I keep a folder of concepts that I update regularly. Quite often I will think of something that relates back to a concept which just gives it that extra bit of kick, this is when I start working em.
Why use t-shirts as a medium?
Because it’s in my opinion street art, its out in the public for the world to see. Don’t get me wrong, I love going to the art gallery, but not everyone does. so what better way to reach the world with your art?
What was the first design you got printed or offered for sale?
Dandelion Flight – it still sells to this day.
What are some of your goals?
Boost my brand bluebutter get it going so it creates regular income. I’m trying to learn the art of Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Marketing. I want my art to be my sole income, instead of having to work commercially.
What are some of your accomplishments as a artist?
I have worked in a variety of mediums. TV series, commericals, movies doing animation using 3D software. I have worked in print medium, but all in all t-shirts have bought me the most joy. I was born to do this baby!
